secunet awarded biometrics project by Austrian Foreign Ministry

[Essen, 24 February 2009] secunet Security Networks AG is to equip all Austrian diplomatic missions with hardware and software for biometric registration systems for EU visa applications. In winning the order, secunet beat off international competition in a tendering procedure by the Austrian Foreign Ministry.

“This order from the Austrian Foreign Ministry is another first-class reference for secunet at European level,” says Dr. Rainer Baumgart, Chief Executive of secunet Security Networks AG. “After the visa project for the German Foreign Office and BIODEV II for the European Union, this is now the third project of this kind. It underlines yet again secunet’s high degree of solution expertise and knowledge in the field of biometrics and eID.”
The European Union is currently preparing a central registration system for the processing of EU visa applications. All EU member states are required to technically equip their diplomatic missions to be able to record biometric features and compare these with a central database. secunet will develop the solution for the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
The centerpiece of the Austrian registration system is secunet biomiddle. This standards-based middleware permits the use of biometric components and identification scanners. secunet also provides the applications that record the application data and the biometric face and fingerprint data. The devices required for recording fingerprints will be supplied by Cross Match Technologies.
